An educational revolution in South Korea

The Republic of Korea has announced plans to modernize education by integrating cutting-edge technologies. The government wants to replace paper textbooks with digital platforms based onartificial intelligence. This upheaval aims to offer personalized learning, capable of adapting to the strengths and weaknesses of each student.

Gradual implementation in schools

From next March, the new teaching methods will be introduced in classes equivalent to CE2, CM1, 5th and Secondary. Initially, these changes will affect subjects such as English, mathematics and computer science. Subsequently, other disciplines, such as history and social sciences, will be integrated into the program.

Digital technologies to support teachers

To achieve this transition, the Ministry of Education asked publishers to develop digital textbooks for tablets or PCs. These tools, enriched with interactive content, will be directly managed by artificial intelligence platforms. This system will make it possible to evaluate student performance in real time and adapt the difficulty of tasks according to their needs.

Advantages and challenges of this approach

With this new method, artificial intelligence takes care of elements such as pronunciation or grammar concepts in English, or even mathematical exercises. Each student will be able to work at their own pace, under the supervision of the teacher who will monitor their progress on their own computer. However, this initiative divides opinions.

Debates and opposition around the initiative

Despite the government’s ambitions, this project provokes multiple reactions. On the one hand, some see it as an opportunity to help students with difficulties and to stimulate those who are already succeeding effortlessly. On the other hand, some teachers and parents believe that the use of artificial intelligence in education is a gimmick, calling into question its real effectiveness.

Political reaction and legislative adjustments

This educational initiative is also a source of debate at the political level. The Korean Parliament recently adopted an amendment, following a vote by the left-wing majority, aimed at considering these new technologies as complementary educational materials rather than replacing paper books. This will allow teachers to keep traditional books for the time being.
