OpenAI, in collaboration with Duke and Harvard Universities, recently published an insightful study on the usage of ChatGPT, their popular chatbot powered by artificial intelligence (AI). The study covers the period from May 2024 to June 2025 and reveals some surprising trends. Notably, it notes a demographic shift among users, from previously predominantly male to now predominantly female, with an average age of 26. Use of ChatGPTis primarily for non-professional purposes, with writing remaining a key activity. The study also highlights the chatbot’s educational role, despite some challenges related to conversation classification and demographic verification. OpenAI, in collaboration with Duke and Harvard Universities, published an in-depth study on the usage of ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence-based virtual assistant. This study sheds light on user profiles, the types of tasks the tool is used for, and the split between professional and personal use. In particular, it reveals a significant shift in user demographics and usage patterns between May 2024 and June 2025. ChatGPT User Profile

Initially, ChatGPT usage was dominated by users with male first names, with 80% of identified users. However, the study shows that by June 2025, the proportion of these users had fallen to 48%, indicating a significant increase in female participation. The average age of users is estimated at 26, although the actual age could be much lower, indicating the tool’s growing popularity among younger generations.

Usage Breakdown: Professional vs. Personal

In May 2024, professional and personal uses of ChatGPT were almost equal, at 53% and 47% respectively. However, within a year, a notable shift occurred: by June 2025, 73% of messages were personal. This transformation reflects a shift toward a more informal and diversified use of artificial intelligence by users.

Types of tasks performed with ChatGPT

Writing remains the main function for which ChatGPT is used, representing approximately 40% of conversations. However, these interactions are primarily oriented toward content correction and editing. Furthermore, ChatGPT is playing a growing role as a personalized learning tool, guiding users through various topics like a true « private tutor. »

At the same time, ChatGPT is used for information research and content writing, demonstrating its usefulness as an information and creation tool. On the other hand, social or gaming-related interactions are quite rare, highlighting a use more focused on personal and professional development.

Implications and Concluding Observations

The results of this study are encouraging for OpenAI, which seeks to demonstrate the usefulness and limited social impact of its tool, especially in light of recent controversies. Regulators remain vigilant, hence the implementation of parental controls to ensure safe use for young users.

However, this study does have limitations: the demographic data of the participants was not fully verified, and some users were omitted, highlighting the complexity of accurately distinguishing between professional and personal uses in a constantly evolving digital landscape.
