A deep dive into an innovative center This Saturday, the Firminy sorting center opened its doors to the public for an immersive tour. Led by Yves Defour, the site director, and the local association « APIEU Mille Feuilles, » the tour offered approximately one hundred visitors a unique opportunity to discover the complex processes made possible by a combination of innovative machinery and artificial intelligence. Robots and Artificial Intelligence: A Complementary Duo
The sorting process begins with the intervention of large automated grapples that dump more than a ton of waste into the hoppers. These sorting operations are assisted by artificial intelligence algorithms that identify and classify the materials with impressive precision. The robots are capable of distinguishing between different types of waste, thus accelerating the sorting process compared to traditional methods.
Practical Application Through an Educational Tour
Wearing fluorescent vests and helmets, and equipped with microphones, visitors, in groups of 20, had the opportunity to tour the facilities and witness real-time demonstrations of the usefulness of new technologies in waste management. Yves Defour emphasized the importance of these technologies in waste management for a population of nearly 670,000, served by a team of 55 dedicated employees.
Workshops and Waste Reduction Awareness In addition to the technical tour, educational games were organized to raise awareness among participants about waste reduction. These workshops allowed visitors to better understand how everyone can contribute to a positive environmental impact.
