Tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini have infiltrated users’ daily lives, sometimes supplanting mental health professionals. Is this phenomenon going too far, or is it ushering in a new era in psychological support? When AI Becomes a Confidant In a world where access to a psychologist can be difficult, many people are turning to artificial intelligence chatbots. A striking example is the case of Manon, 26, who uses ChatGPT as a therapeutic adjunct. She describes the chatbot’s attentive listening, which she compares to her experience with mental health professionals: « I needed more human support; my therapist treated me like I was in a factory. » For many users, these AIs act as trusted confidants, offering them a space to express their emotions without fear of judgment. Support to soothe dark thoughts Antoine, 31, diagnosed with ASD, also illustrates this trend. Using Gemini AI, he finds support in managing his complex thoughts. « It always starts by telling me that my thoughts are normal, » he says. This type of reassurance is crucial for individuals who often lack a caring human ear. The Limits of AI in Mental Health Despite the undeniable benefits these tools can provide, they are no substitute for human interaction. Professionals’ opinions are clear: AI is not a substitute, but a complement. Psychologist Loïc Crobu emphasizes that « AI is a substitute psychologist » and points out that many patients go through several approaches before finding what works for them. It’s a tool that can help, but in no way replaces the respect of human therapy. The Dangers of an Exclusive Bond with AIThis destructive obsession is tragically illustrated by the story of Sewell Setzer, a teenager who took his own life after developing an excessive attachment to an AI. This case highlights the potential dangers of a biased emotional bond. While AI can be helpful, it can also foster emotional isolation, a risk that many psychologists are quick to point out. A Lack of Emotional Understanding

It is crucial to clarify that AI, despite its advanced capabilities, lacks deep emotional understanding. Dr. Geoffrey Post emphasizes that this technology cannot decode nonverbal cues, such as facial expressions, silences, or vocal tension. These elements are essential for effective therapy and allow therapists to better understand their patients’ condition.

Initiatives to Strengthen Psychological Support

Faced with this situation, government initiatives are seeking to address the psychological emergency. Michel Barnier recently announced a €600 million investment in mental health, while a €109 billion plan to develop AI has been implemented. This raises questions about the interconnectedness of mental health and emerging technologies, while suggesting a necessary shift in the approach to mental suffering.

However, the challenge lies in striking a balance between these new technological solutions and essential human support. AI can be this « new player, » but it must be used with caution, taking care not to minimize the inestimable value of human relationships in the care pathway.
