Off Radio Krakow, a public service station in Poland, took the initiative to test the use ofartificial intelligence to host its programs. The avatars of Alex, Emilia and Jakub were introduced as part of an “experiment” aimed at evaluating the potential contribution of AI to the media. These digital animators were supposed to interact and interview historical Polish figures, such as Wislawa Szymborska, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
The virtual staging of historical figures
Among the protagonists of the project, Emilia, one of the voices generated by the AI, was put forward to speak virtually with historical figures like Szymborska. This choice to feature deceased personalities quickly led to controversy. The poet’s words and voice were entirely created by AI, sparking mixed reactions regarding the authenticity and ethics of this approach.
An outcry against the use of AI
The initiative did not go unnoticed and caused an outcry among the public. The lack of clarity in the project, considered amateurish by some critics, was strongly criticized. Mateusz Demski, a former contributor to the radio station, highlighted the lack of reliable methodology and evidence supporting the experiment. According to him, the use of public funds for such an experiment was described as irresponsible.
The ethical and legal limits of AI in the media
The Off Radio Krakow operation highlighted the ethical and legal limits of the use ofartificial intelligence in the media. The ability to generate discussions with historical figures raises questions about the authenticity of the information disseminated and the respect due to the dead. These concerns led to the immediate termination of the experiment, although it was initially scheduled to last three months.
