Tesla relies on end-to-end artificial intelligence to improve its autonomous driving

Famous electric vehicle company Tesla, led by Elon Musk, announces plans to integrate end-to-end artificial intelligence (AI) into version v12 of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. The move marks an important step in Tesla’s efforts to develop and deploy autonomous vehicles on a large scale. With this new system, the company hopes to be able to offer fully autonomous cars as early as next year.

A major development for autonomous driving

The development of autonomous driving at Tesla has made relatively slow progress in recent years, with large-scale deployment still seeming far away. However, integrating end-to-end AI into the FSD could be a game-changer in terms of performance and reliability for users.

According to Elon Musk, this new approach would make it possible to manage all aspects of driving, « from video to steering, including brakes and acceleration. » This represents a significant change of direction for Tesla, which previously used different systems to process data from sensors embedded in its vehicles.

Waymo introduces Safe Exit feature to enhance rider safety

Meanwhile, Waymo, the self-driving taxi service developed by Google’s parent company Alphabet, is also looking to improve its users’ safety experience. The company recently introduced a new feature called Safe Exit that alerts passengers at the end of a trip if there is an oncoming car, cyclist or pedestrian, letting them know when it is safe to exit the vehicle.

How does Safe Exit work?

To provide this functionality, Waymo uses a combination of lidars, radars and cameras to constantly monitor the surroundings of the autonomous vehicle. When an obstacle approaches, such as another car or a pedestrian, a warning appears on the screens at the front and rear of the vehicle, accompanied by a map of what is approaching. An audible alert also sounds, allowing passengers to wait before opening the door.

This innovation is part of Waymo’s desire to guarantee the safety of its passengers and other road users throughout the journey. This concern is shared by many players in the sector, who are constantly seeking to improve the performance and reliability of their autonomous driving systems.

The future of mobility: self-driving cars and artificial intelligence

The automotive industry is in the midst of a major upheaval, with the advent of AI and autonomous vehicle technologies. These innovations have the potential to radically transform the way we move and interact with our vehicles.

  • Reduction in the number of accidents : With more advanced and reliable autonomous driving systems, road accidents could be significantly reduced, thereby improving road safety.
  • Traffic optimization : autonomous cars will be able to communicate with each other and adapt their behavior according to traffic conditions, thus limiting traffic jams and parking problems.
  • Increased accessibility : elderly people, disabled people or people without a driving license will be able to benefit from autonomous mobility, making driving accessible to a wider audience.
  • Improved energy efficiency : autonomous electric vehicles will be able to optimize their energy consumption, thus helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Despite these promising prospects, there is still much work to be done to overcome the technical and regulatory challenges of deploying autonomous driving at scale. Nonetheless, progress by Tesla, Waymo and others in the industry shows that AI and the car
