The agreement between IATSE and film industry producers represents a major breakthrough in the use of artificial intelligence. By paving the way for the integration of this revolutionary technology into the production process, this agreement marks a new era for the sector. Let’s find out how AI is becoming an essential asset for the future of cinema.
The IATSE Agreement and the Use of AI as a Tool
The agreement signed recently between the main studios and the union representing the film crews, theInternational Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), highlights how artificial intelligence (AI) is integrated as a valuable tool in the film industry. With certain limitations, this agreement provides for the controlled use of AI by workers, opening up new opportunities while putting in place essential protections.
Consultation and Training on AI
One of the key aspects of this agreement is that workers can ask their employers for a consultation regarding the use of AI. This helps ensure that employees are informed and involved in decisions regarding the use of this technology. Additionally, a committee will be trained to provide training on AI skills, which will allow union members to become familiar with the practical applications of artificial intelligence in their daily work.
Internal Use of AI and Remuneration
The agreement states that if an employee uses their own AI system, they are entitled to a kit rental fee, similar to rental fees for sound equipment. This provision recognizes AI as a legitimate work tool and provides compensation to workers who invest in this technology.
Protecting Jobs and Workers’ Rights
One of the most important points of the agreement is that it prohibits the use of non-unionized workforce for the use of AI. In addition, the current contract provides for severance pay and professional reconversions if a worker loses their job due to “technological changes,” which includes the deployment of AI. The agreement also specifies that no employee will be forced to use AI prompts who could replace other unionized workers.
The agreement with AI and Job Security
As part of the agreement, workers must give their separate consent for any activity AI scanning, and this consent cannot be a condition of employment. This ensures that workers maintain control over their participation in AI applications.
Discussion Meetings and Periodic Adjustments
The agreement stipulates quarterly meetings with employers to discuss AI, as well as biannual meetings with the studio group, as needed. These regular discussions ensure continuous updating of policies and practices relating to the use of AI, ensuring smooth adaptation to technological developments.

Financial Implications and Social Benefits
Negotiations also focused on salary increases: 7% for the first year, followed by increases of 4% and 3.5%. Health and pension funds will benefit from new revenues from streaming residue, with more than $700 million in additional funding to offset the economic impacts of the pandemic and recent strikes. There will be no increase in health care costs for employees or their dependents, nor any reduction in health benefits, according to the summary of terms of the agreement.
With this agreement, IATSE recognizes and embraces AI as a tool that can improve efficiency and create new opportunities for its members, while putting in place rigorous safeguards to ensure that the rights and jobs of workers are preserved.
