OpenAI, in collaboration with the National Bureau of Economic Research, conducted an analysis of 1.5 million conversations and identified 700 million active users. The numbers speak for themselves: 18 billion messages exchanged each week. This study, the largest ever conducted on ChatGPT, highlights uses that far exceed initial expectations.
Use Focused on Practical Guidance
The results of this study reveal that nearly 80% of uses are structured around three areas: practical guidance, information research andwriting. Within these categories, tutoring and practical advice emerge as the most common uses. Whether it’s an improvised recipe or school coaching, ChatGPT appears sometimes as a powerful search engine, sometimes as a tutor available 24 hours a day.
Writing at the heart of professional conversations
It is interesting to note that in terms of professional communication, ChatGPT is used mainly for writing. Indeed, 40 to 42% of exchanges in the professional world relate to tasks such as writing emails, producing reports or translating. For managers, this figure even rises to more than one in two messages. On the other hand, discussions around code represent only a minimal fraction of exchanges – only 4.2%.
A move towards personal use
The latest results show a marked transition towards more personal uses. In the space of a year, the share of professional exchanges has fallen, going from 47% to 27%. Personal uses have jumped to 73% in 2025. Homework, life advice and creative inspiration, ChatGPT is now positioned as a daily life companion, far from its image of a simple professional assistant.
Listening emotions
Surprisingly, emotional interactions are rare. OpenAI estimates that only 2% of exchanges concern emotional support, and even less (between 0.4 and 1.9%) affect personal relationships. Yet other research indicates that one in three adolescents already uses a chatbot to discuss social relationships, and one in two adults have used it for psychological support. In doing so, a major question arises: ChatGPT, virtual friend or real substitute?
A changing audience
The demographic dynamics of ChatGPT users have undergone significant changes. Previously dominated by male users (80% in 2022), the audience is now predominantly female. Three years later, more than half of users have female first names. In terms of age, 46% of messages come from the 18-25 age group, while older users show a more professional use. The importance of algorithmic biasesHowever, the study should be approached with a critical eye. OpenAI’s conclusions are based on automated analysis, and the proposed categories reflect the algorithm’s biases.
