An initiative at a crossroads In a world where fake accounts and bots are invading social networks, OpenAI aims to initiate a revolution. The ambition is to build a digital space where every interaction is truly human. But behind this appealing promise lies a complex reality: to enter this world, having an account won’t be enough; you’ll have to prove you’re a human. Implementing biometric verification systems like iris scans could prove to be a real adoption challenge. The idea is to use a device called the Orb. The Orb, designed by a company founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, is an integral part of this project. Worldwide, only 674 centers exist, with just 32 in the United States. This requires users to physically travel to be scanned, which hinders the platform’s accessibility. Furthermore, mistrust surrounding the collection of biometric data is a significant obstacle. The willingness to entrust sensitive data to a controversial company does not reassure a large portion of the population.
