Faced with growing concerns about recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and their impact on society, UNESCO is seeking to put in place ethical frameworks to guide the future of AI. In this article, we explore how UNESCO is working to shape a more responsible future for artificial intelligence.

The call to action for more ethical AI

On March 22, 2023, an open letter titled “Disrupting Giant AI Experiments” was published on the Future of Life Institute website.. This letter asked AI labs to pause training AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months in order to focus on creating more accurate, safe, interpretable, transparent, robust AI , aligned, trustworthy and loyal.

This initiative gained weight with the addition of the signatures of Elon Musk, business mogul and investor, as well as Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple. Since its publication, the letter has sparked several debates and reactions regarding the ethics of AI and the need for a regulatory framework to guide its future development.

UNESCO and efforts for ethical AI

Faced with these challenges, UNESCO is working on several fronts to promote ethical AI:

  • Developing international standards to guide AI developments
  • Promoting dialogue between stakeholders, including governments, businesses and civil society
  • Strengthening the capacities of developing countries to participate in discussions on AI ethics and implement appropriate policies
  • Raising public awareness of the ethical issues raised by AI

UNESCO is focusing on several key areas to promote ethical AI:

  1. Protection of privacy and personal data
  2. Transparency and explainability of AI systems
  3. Respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms
  4. Empowerment of actors involved in the development and use of AI
  5. Promoting inclusiveness and diversity in the field of AI

The challenges posed by AI in the educational field

Besides general ethical concerns, AI also raises specific questions in the field of education, particularly with regard to:

  • The benefits and limits of using AI to teach and correct homework
  • Expectations for school and academic writing
  • The role of writing and thinking in learning
  • The potential consequences of AI on critical skills and creativity

The need for responsible AI in education

To address these issues, it is essential that education stakeholders work together with AI researchers and developers to ensure that artificial intelligence technologies are used responsibly and ethically.
