Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a key player in this field, offering innovative solutions and accelerating the hoped-for progress. Through groundbreaking projects using advanced techniques such as tokamak and inertial confinement fusion, AI continues to amaze the scientific world with its impressive feats. Nuclear fusion represents significant hope for clean and abundant energy. However, mastering plasma at 100 million degrees Celsius is a colossal challenge. Approaches using tokamaks and lasers, enhanced by artificial intelligence systems, are showing spectacular progress. However, technical and ethical challenges persist, but AI could well be the key to transforming this energy vision into an industrial reality. Let\u2019s dive into the fascinating world where AI and nuclear fusion intertwine. <strong>Nuclear Fusion: A Colossal Energy Dream<\/strong>Nuclear fusion is often compared to the energy of the Sun, an extraordinary force born from the fusion of light nuclei to create heavier ones, releasing a vast amount of energy. Unlike fission, it does not produce radioactive waste or greenhouse gases. However, the technological challenges of recreating this reaction on Earth are immense. Current prototypes are both gigantic and expensive, featuring sophisticated facilities that require innovative solutions to control plasmas at extreme temperatures.<strong>The Technical Challenges of Plasma Control<\/strong> To achieve successful fusion, it is imperative to heat atoms to temperatures of over 100 million degrees, where the atoms become plasma, an ionized gas that cannot be contained by solid materials. Two main approaches have been studied for decades: magnetic confinement and inertial confinement. The magnetic approach uses a tokamak, a torus-shaped reactor that confines the plasma using powerful magnetic fields, while the inertial approach uses giant lasers to rapidly compress and heat a fuel capsule. AI in Tokamaks: Improving Plasma Control In tokamaks, AI plays a crucial role by generating billions of data points for each experiment. This ability to predict and prevent disruptions before they occur has been widely documented, notably on the DIII-D tokamak, a game-changer for fusion reaction control. <strong>Digital twins and AI-powered model optimization<\/strong> Digital twins <strong>represent another innovative application of AI, enabling the creation of computer replicas of physical systems. These models accelerate complex plasma simulations, filling the gaps left by current physics equations. By optimizing a reactor\u2019s architecture using these digital twins, AI plays an indispensable role in simulating and optimizing configurations without direct experimental testing.<\/strong> Inertial Fusion and Artificial Intelligence<strong>In inertial confinement fusion, where high-power lasers are used, AI can optimize laser pulses to maximize fusion efficiency. At the University of Rochester, astonishing results have been achieved by increasing fusion efficiency using AI. This technology makes it possible to design optimal experimental configurations and precisely align targets, making experiments more reliable and efficient. The Ethical and Technical Challenges of AI in Nuclear Fusion<\/strong> Despite these advances, the integration of AI in fusion raises significant ethical and technical questions. Models must be robust, interpretable, and adaptable from one machine to another. Liability issues in the event of algorithm failures or material damage remain unresolved.
