This climate of tension stems not only from the fear of job losses, but also from a deeper question: how far can we rely on these machines without risking losing our humanity? Faced with this technological revolution, a generation that has mastered digital technology seems to hesitate, questioning the line between beneficial assistance and the risk of cognitive and emotional decline. Generation Z, born in the digital age, faces a troubling reality where artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming ubiquitous. Yet, this generation, supposedly delighted by the benefits of technology, feels profound anxiety about the possibility of seeing their humanity diminished. Beyond questions about jobs and genuine concerns about automated assistance, a much more personal question emerges: how far can we rely on machines without losing what makes us human? A generation facing a paradoxical promise We have often been portrayed as Generation Z, driven by a quest for efficiency, eager to delegate tasks to AI in order to free up time for more noble pursuits. While rhetoric praising automation has taken center stage, the reality is quite different. In lecture halls and libraries, a shadow of doubt hangs in the air. Excitement is not the prevailing emotion; fear prevails. The fear of losing our capacity for thought. This fear isn’t just about the possibility of losing one’s job or seeing academic cheating become commonplace; it touches on the very essence of human existence. The fear is all the more palpable when one realizes that AI isn’t just helping, but is truly replacing us. It thinks before questions are even formulated, and many young people are apprehensive about this dangerous shift.Stripping Our Capacity for Reflection Today’s students don’t interpret AI as a simple tool for efficiency, but as a mental crutch they would prefer to avoid while they are still capable of navigating things independently. They fear losing the reflex to reflect, analyze, and think. Intellectual effort, the friction necessary for creativity, is often replaced by the reassuring immediacy of clean and structured answers provided by algorithms. This phenomenon, far from being neutral, calls into question our relationship with intellect and creativity. Research findings shed light on this unease.Research conducted by MIT reveals that there is indeed a price to pay for this assistance. AI users, while writing faster and with less cognitive effort, experience a significant decline in their critical thinking skills. They become trapped in an echo chamber where AI validates their work without any real questioning. Conversely, those who dedicate themselves to writing without assistance report not only greater satisfaction but also exhibit more intense brain activity. In short, AI provides relief, but it lulls us to sleep.

Generations in conflict

The contrast between students, anxious about the future, and professors, serene, is striking. Teachers, already secure in their careers, perceive AI as simply a fun tool. For Generation Z, AI is a competitor. In an unstable and saturated job landscape, this faster, more efficient, and less questionable technology is causing sleepless anxiety. The dilemma is clear: how can we invest in our own development when the machine always seems to siphon off the best fruits of our efforts?

An existential anxiety

Generation Z’s anxiety transcends questions of employability to touch on deeper, more intimate matters: identity. If thought becomes optional thanks to automation, where does the human element within each of us lie? This generation sends a powerful message: humanity is not forged through ease, but through effort and the time spent developing ideas. AI, by eliminating these moments of struggle and questioning, threatens human uniqueness.

A wake-up call for our future

Ironically, Generation Z, despite having grown up with digital technology, is taking a remarkable step back. This isn’t a rejection of technology, but rather an instinct for self-preservation. While other generations embraced automation wholeheartedly, Gen Z displays a desire to exert control over this force. The crucial question arises: how can we leverage these tools without sacrificing our own human essence? How can we maintain active engagement in the face of machines that offer answers before we’ve even articulated our thoughts?

This fear could be more than just paralyzing: it could prove to be the first credible warning sign for our society. In a world where thinking is becoming optional, continuing to think for oneself is less of a challenge than a radical act.

And you, what do you think?
