These apps, such as WhatsApp, Snapchat, and Acrobat Reader, modify their design to showcase new AI features, supposedly free. However, behind these innovations lie deceptive practices designed to increase profits by raising subscription prices. Faced with this technological pressure, users are confronted with a limited choice, often without their knowledge, in adopting these energy-intensive technologies. Why apps push you to adopt artificial intelligence: the false gift of ‘free’ featuresIn an increasingly digital world, apps and software are constantly changing their design to encourage the use of artificial intelligence. However, what appears to be a generous offer of new free features can conceal commercial intentions driven by massive investments. This article explores how and why these design changes occur, the underlying financial impact, and the ethical implications. Aggressive Design Strategies to Encourage AI Use

In 2024, researchers at the University of Strasbourg studied 53 applications and software programs to understand how design is used to push users toward AI. Eye-catching visual elements such as pop-ups, animations, and colorful buttons were observed, making the AI option ubiquitous in several applications like Acrobat Reader and WhatsApp. Sometimes, these features are activated almost automatically, forcing users to use them against their will.

The Financial Background of ‘Free’ Features

Behind this push towards AI use lie significant financial stakes.

Data centers require colossal investments to support AI models. To recoup these investments, tech companies raise subscription prices, justifying the increase by the integration and use of AI, often regardless of users’ actual needs or desires. The Difficulty of Disabling AI Features Many applications do not allow for easy disabling of AI options. These features are sometimes poorly integrated or only temporarily deactivated. This is a blatant example of what is called a dark pattern

in design: a set of techniques aimed at manipulating the user. This goes against European regulations such as the Digital Services Act, which prohibits such practices.

Social and Environmental Consequences The pressure to adopt AI is not without consequences. Many users are reluctant to adopt these features for environmental reasons, due to the significant energy consumption of data centers, or for social reasons, because they simply don’t see the point. Yet, the industry continues to push them toward these choices, often without considering their input. User recourse

Faced with these aggressive practices, it is essential that users voice their opposition. Collective mobilization could encourage changes in the management of these AI features, provided that regulatory bodies act accordingly. Companies must be held accountable for their practices to ensure they respect consumer rights.

<div class="kk-star-ratings kksr-auto kksr-align-right kksr-valign-bottom"
data-payload='{"align":"right","id":"102137","slug":"default","valign":"bottom","ignore":"","reference":"auto","class":"","count":"0","legendonly":"","readonly":"","score":"0","starsonly":"","best":"5","gap":"5","greet":"Notez cet article","legend":"0/5 - (0 votes)","size":"24","title":"Why apps are pushing you to adopt artificial intelligence: the false gift of 'free'
