Bordeaux<\/strong> is embarking on an ambitious project with the creation of a colossal supercomputer<\/strong> and an \u00ab\u00a0AI campus,\u00a0\u00bb planned for part of the Parc des Expositions parking lot. This initiative, unprecedented in scale on France\u2019s west coast, represents investments already estimated at several billion euros. By partnering with private companies, the city aspires to become a central hub for the development of artificial intelligence<\/strong>, thus boosting the local economy while respecting the principles of ethical and responsible AI.<\/p>\n\n

During the Medef\u2019s New Year\u2019s greetings, the Mayor of Bordeaux and the President of the Bordeaux M\u00e9tropole unveiled an ambitious project: the construction of a giant supercomputer<\/strong> coupled with a data center at the heart of a future artificial intelligence campus<\/strong>. This spectacular project, announced for part of the Parc des Expositions parking lot, aims to transform Bordeaux into a pillar of AI on France\u2019s western coast, attracting billions of euros in investment and generating hundreds of jobs.<\/strong> An innovative and ambitious project<\/p>\n\n

On Wednesday, January 7, the announcements by Bordeaux\u2019s Green Party mayor, Pierre Hurmic, and the president of Bordeaux M\u00e9tropole, Christine Bost, made a strong impression at the event organized by the Medef (French Business Confederation). The details of the project, while still vague, are nonetheless impressive, combining a massive supercomputer and a data center with a campus dedicated to AI. In describing this \u00ab\u00a0unprecedented\u00a0\u00bb project, Pierre Hurmic called it \u00ab\u00a0an engine for our businesses.\u00a0\u00bb<\/h2>\n\n

A strategically geopolitical approach<\/strong> The president of Bordeaux M\u00e9tropole, Christine Bost, emphasized the geopolitical importance of the project. The development and control of artificial intelligence infrastructure represent a major issue of national and European sovereignty. The project is integrated into a local ecosystem already rich in research laboratories and clusters, further strengthened by the Friendship Cable, which connects Europe to the United States via the Gironde estuary.<\/strong>Exemplary Infrastructure<\/p>\n\n

The project is appealing due to its scale and ambition. Planned to be of unprecedented size on the western coast of France, it is essential that the site be exemplary in terms of energy efficiency. According to available information, 80% of the space will house the supercomputer, capable of processing billions of calculations simultaneously thanks to thousands of processors. The remaining 20% \u200b\u200bwill be dedicated to the data center, a secure location for storing digital data.<\/h2>\n\n

A Remarkable Economic and Territorial Impact<\/h2>\n\n

The project anticipates the creation of hundreds of jobs, thus representing a major opportunity for the region. This investment \u00ab\u00a0is planned for a portion of the Exhibition Center parking lot, owned by the Bordeaux M\u00e9tropole,\u00a0\u00bb and will be perfectly integrated into the redevelopment of the new \u00ab\u00a0gateways\u00a0\u00bb to Bordeaux M\u00e9tropole. The AI \u200b\u200bcampus will allow incubators like InnoCampus and A\u00e9roCampus to enhance their offerings and attract local and international startups. Metropolitan debates awaiting: Metropolitan elected officials are expected to discuss the specifics of the project during their meetings, with a session scheduled for January 30th. The goal is to build a \u00ab\u00a0responsible\u00a0\u00bb AI campus, in line with the ethical and responsible charter recently adopted by the local authority. The project thus embodies a vision of secure, respectful, and beneficial artificial intelligence for the local economy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n
