In a context where artificial intelligence is taking an increasingly prominent place in our societies, a wind of controversy is blowing with the announcement of Donald Trump\u2019s executive order to eradicate wokeness from AI systems. This approach raises questions. Is this a genuine desire to guarantee ideological neutrality or a pretext to reinforce conservative biases? Between the promises of impartial AI and fears of ideological centralization, the battle for the future of artificial intelligence is about to be decided. The debate over the place of wokeness in artificial intelligence (AI) has just taken an unexpected turn with the executive order signed by Donald Trump. The latter aims to exclude all forms of ideological bias from AI systems used by the federal government. At the heart of this controversy, the administration accuses wokeness of distorting the truth to the detriment of the neutrality expected in public tools. While this initiative is presented as a defense of freedom of expression, it also raises numerous ethical and technical questions about the true neutrality of artificial intelligence.A controversial executive order: the fight against wokeness<\/strong> On July 23, 2025, Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at establishing principles of ideological neutrality in the development and use of artificial intelligence within federal contracts. The term \u00ab\u00a0wokeness\u00a0\u00bb encompasses a set of policies that include diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), perceived by the administration as unacceptable biases. This initiative comes at a time when certain AI models are accused of favoring progressive ideologies, thus calling into question the reliability of AI systems used by the government. A crusade for neutrality<\/strong> At a summit co-hosted by the podcast All-In and the Hill & Valley Forum, Trump has described wokeness as a direct threat to the objectivity of AI tools. Figures like AI consultant David Sacks support this hard line, arguing for a defense of freedom of speech in the face of what they see as the ideological centralization of technologies. Evidence of these biases includes controversial examples, such as the depiction of a black image of George Washington or diverse Nazi soldiers, highlighting the need to cleanse AI models of any \u00ab\u00a0woke\u00a0\u00bb influence.<\/strong> The Question of AI Impartiality<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n

This executive order has sparked debates about the possibility of impartial AI. Experts like Philip Seargeant, a linguist at the Open University, argue that no AI system can claim complete neutrality. Indeed, each model is a reflection of the data it consumes and the choices of its designers. This reality raises questions: if we seek to eliminate one bias, don\u2019t we risk introducing another, shaped by conservative political priorities? A dynamic of repression<\/strong> The perverse effect of such a decree could translate into economic pressure that would encourage companies to modify their datasets to meet Washington\u2019s demands. Such a dynamic could have harmful repercussions on innovation, putting societal concerns on the back burner. Rumman Chowdhury, former US science envoy for AI, warns against this trend toward a systematic rewriting of knowledge, fearing that a few private or political actors could control information through initiatives like xAI, which aims to correct the body of human knowledge. Towards a politicization of truth?<\/strong> Interestingly, although their approaches differ, the United States and China seem to be converging toward a politicization of truth. While some parts of the global community are introspecting on societal biases in AI, others, such as the Chinese government, are imposing a strict framework prohibiting any questioning of the powers that be. Could Trump\u2019s initiative, which seeks to sweep wokeness under the rug, actually lead to fairer AI, or is it simply a means of reinforcing a different ideology? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n
