The École Normale Supérieure in Paris, an iconic institution of the French academic elite, recently opened a groundbreaking laboratory dedicated to the study of artificial intelligence (AI). With a team of 70 faculty members from diverse disciplines, this innovative center, named « Normalesup.ai, » aims to anticipate and shape future technological advancements in AI. This ambitious project extends beyond technological research to encompass a broader political framework, addressing the crucial issue of European data sovereignty. In collaboration with companies and deep tech startups, the laboratory intends to play a key role in the evolution of AI, thereby strengthening interdisciplinarity and innovation at the heart of the institution. Normale-Sup, one of France’s most prestigious academic institutions, inaugurated a new laboratory dedicated to artificial intelligence on January 28. Located in Paris, this laboratory brings together 70 teacher-researchers from various disciplines, such as mathematical sciences and linguistics. Anne Bouverot, Chair of the Board of Directors of ENS-PSL, affirms that this project addresses the need to strengthen data sovereignty in Europe. This laboratory also supports entrepreneurial initiatives in collaboration with companies and startups specializing in deep tech. The Genesis of an Ambitious Project The new laboratory, named « Normalesup.ai, » is the result of an initiative by the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) on rue d’Ulm as part of its ongoing commitment to innovation. At the heart of this space, teachers from multiple disciplines seek to combine their expertise to anticipate and promote the next technological breakthroughs.

A Revolution Within the Historic Walls of Normale-SupThe laboratory’s premises are located in an iconic building, steeped in the legacy of the French Revolution. Two centuries later, a new revolution—that of artificial intelligence—is emerging here. The researchers gathered here are driven by the goal of deconstructing and rethinking conventional paradigms to envision the future of AI. Diversity at the service of innovation With 70 faculty members involved, this laboratory benefits from a wide range of expertise. This diversity is a major asset for approaching AI from different angles, whether it be programming, machine learning, or the ethics of AI. The work within the laboratory aims to lead to the publication of new research and the development of specialized courses for students. The political and technological role of Normalesup.ai According to Anne Bouverot, Chair of the Board of Directors of ENS-PSL, this project is as much political as it is technological. She emphasizes the need to address the issue of data sovereignty at the European level, in contrast to the dominance of private American and Chinese laboratories. The transdisciplinary structure of the ENS is seen as an ideal framework for tackling these complex issues.

A fertile ground for deeptech startups

In addition to promoting academic research, the « Normalesup.ai » laboratory aims to incubate new startups in the field of deeptech. This environment encourages collaboration with industry and supports the creation of skilled jobs, thereby strengthening the national and European economic fabric.
