Tesla relies on end-to-end artificial intelligence to improve its autonomous driving

The famous electric vehicle company Tesla, led by Elon Musk, announces its intention to integrate an end-to-end artificial intelligence (AI) in the v12 version of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. The move marks an important step in Tesla's efforts to develop and deploy autonomous vehicles at scale. With this new system, the company hopes to be able to offer fully autonomous cars as early as next year.

A major development for autonomous driving

Self-driving development at Tesla has seen relatively slow progress in recent years, with full-scale deployment still seeming a long way off. Integrating end-to-end AI into the FSD, however, could be a game-changer in terms of performance and reliability for users.

According to Elon Musk, this new approach would make it possible to manage all aspects of driving, “from video to steering, including brakes and acceleration”. This represents a significant shift for Tesla, which previously relied on different systems to process data from on-board sensors in its vehicles.

Waymo introduces the Safe Exit feature to enhance user safety

Meanwhile, Waymo, the self-driving taxi service developed by Alphabet, Google's parent company, is also looking to improve the safety experience of its users. The company recently introduced a new feature called Safe Exit which alerts passengers at the end of a journey if an oncoming car, cyclist or pedestrian is coming, to let them know when it is safe to exit the vehicle.

How does Safe Exit work?

To provide this functionality, Waymo uses a combination of lidars, radars and cameras to constantly monitor the surroundings of the autonomous vehicle. When an obstacle approaches, such as another car or a pedestrian, a warning appears on the screens in the front and rear of the vehicle, along with a map of what is approaching. An audible alert also sounds, allowing passengers to wait before opening the door.

This innovation is part of Waymo's desire to guarantee the safety of its passengers and other road users throughout the journey. This concern is shared by many players in the sector, who are constantly seeking to improve the performance and reliability of their autonomous driving systems.

The future of mobility: self-driving cars and artificial intelligence

The automotive industry is in a state of upheaval, with the advent of AI and autonomous vehicle technologies. These innovations have the potential to radically transform the way we move and interact with our vehicles.

  • Reduction in the number of accidents : Thanks to more advanced and reliable autonomous driving systems, road accidents could be significantly reduced, thus improving road safety.
  • Traffic Optimization : autonomous cars will be able to communicate with each other and adapt their behavior according to traffic conditions, thus limiting traffic jams and parking problems.
  • Increased accessibility : the elderly, disabled or deprived of a driving license will be able to enjoy autonomous mobility, making driving accessible to a wider public.
  • Improved energy efficiency : autonomous electric vehicles will be able to optimize their energy consumption, thus helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Despite these promising prospects, there is still a lot of work to be done to overcome the technical and regulatory challenges associated with the large-scale deployment of autonomous driving. Nevertheless, the progress made by Tesla, Waymo and other industry players shows that AI and the car
