AI-generated images: hidden censorship?

Lately, social networks have been invaded by images of political figures such as Emmanuel Macron, Vladimir Putin, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Donald Trump and even the Pope, created by artificial intelligence. However, it would appear that the creation of images of Chinese President Xi Jinping is prohibited on certain platforms, according to the washington post. When a user wants to generate a representation of the Chinese president with keywords such as "Xi Jinping" or "Chinese president", a warning message appears. This situation raises questions about possible censorship in the use of artificial intelligence.

The growing concern around the Western soul in the face of artificial intelligence

The philosopher Michel Onfray evokes in his new book, Anima, the decline of the West, the reign of progress, transhumanism and euthanasia. Faced with technological advances and the emergence of artificial intelligence, he expresses great concern for the future of the Western soul. According to him, artificial intelligence could pose a threat to our humanity and our values.

The case of chatbots fuels the debate

ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot, has received mixed reactions among Canadians. A poll conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Global News shows that 31% of respondents believe the development of AI technologies is a good thing, while 30% thinks the opposite and 39% don't know what to think.

  • Advantages : AI proponents point to productivity gains, improved medical diagnostics, and solving complex problems.
  • The inconvenients : critics fear the job, privacy and ethical consequences, especially with the use of AI by authoritarian regimes.

The danger of an AI used by dictators

Yoshua Bengio, a world-renowned artificial intelligence researcher, is also worried about the potential abuses of this technology. He particularly fears that a dictator could seize AI to control and manipulate populations. According to him, it is essential to put in place regulations to oversee the use of artificial intelligence and prevent these risks.

How to prevent these deviations?

To prevent artificial intelligence from becoming an instrument of power in the hands of authoritarian leaders, several measures could be considered:

  • Transparency : AI algorithms and operations should be transparent and understandable to the general public.
  • International regulation : global legislation could regulate the use of AI in different areas, including surveillance, propaganda and political decisions.
  • Education : raise citizens' awareness of the challenges of artificial intelligence and teach them to recognize the manipulations and false information generated by this technology.

In short, faced with the emergence of artificial intelligence and its possible abuses, it is essential to adopt a responsible and ethical approach in its development, in order to preserve our societies and our values. Collaboration between governments, researchers and citizens seems essential for AI to remain a tool at the service of humanity rather than an instrument of oppressive power.
